We all have a bucket list of the things we want to accomplish, my #1 is the summit of Kilimanjaro. While it’s not Mt. Everest, it’s not a walk in the park, Kili is rated as a Strenuous 5 trek. My hope is to trek via the Rongai route which, is a gradual ascent to the summit of Uhuru Peak. So now, let’s go Explore Kilimanjaro.
Kilimanjaro with its three volcanic cones, “Kibo”, “Mawenzi”, and “Shira”, is a dormant volcano in Tanzania. The highest mountain in Africa, with its summit about 16,100 ft from its base, and 19,318 ft above sea level. The mountain is part of Kilimanjaro National Park so there is much more to explore Kilimanjaro.
While Kili is not a stroll in the park, the success rate is about 90% to the summit. This is an adventure that most healthy trekkers with a moderate degree of physical fitness can accomplish. However, before you begin to explore Kilimanjaro you do need to begin training for the climb about six months in advance.
As you explore Kilimanjaro on your trek, you will be climbing for 6 hours or more on most days. The terrain is varied with uneven rocks and loose gravel and difficult going at times. The toughest day will be summit day, you will hike for 16 hours to the top and down to camp.
